DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM HARRIS, FATHER OF GRAVES HARRIS, OF VA
GENERATION 1
William Harris (1) was born about 1720 (or 1736 ) in Hanover Co,., VA, and died in 1799 (or about 1803 ) in Prince Edward Co., VA. He married ------. The ancestry of William Harris is not known, although there has been much speculation, some of it disproven. All their children were born in VA, at least the last two in Prince Edward Co.
It is believed that Graves Harris was named for a Graves ancestor, probably his mother.
A theory of R-5 is that William Harris was a son (probably the only son) of George Harris, baptized 1701 in New Kent Co., VA. This George Harris was the third son of Major William Harris of Henrico Co., VA. The three sons of William Harris were all mentioned in the probate and administration of his estate in Prince Edward Co., VA. Graves and Ralph married Baldwin sisters and moved to Georgia in 1805, after selling the land and mill that they inherited from their father.
R-5 believes that the wife of William Harris may have been a Graves because he thinks the oldest, George Harris, was named for William's father, and the next, Graves Harris, was named for his mother.
Speculation by the compiler (Kenneth V. Graves) is that the wife of William Harris may have been a granddaughter of Ralph 4 Graves (descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA) and Unity White. The date of birth and the places in VA were right, and there were name similarities. Ralph Harris, son of William Harris, could have been named for his great-grandfather Ralph 4 Graves (or his grandfather, if William's wife was a daughter of Ralph 5 Graves, oldest son of Ralph 4). The middle name of White for Martha, one of the children of Graves Harris, could indicate a descent from this family. It could also be conjectured that the name of the wife of William Harris was Elizabeth Graves, since one of the children of Graves Harris was Elizabeth Graves Harris. In looking at the children of Ralph Graves and Unity White, the probable sons are Ralph Graves, Henry White Graves, Joseph Graves, and John Graves. The first 2 had daughters named Elizabeth whose marriages to other people are known. Nothing is known about the marriage of the children of Joseph, and the youngest son John had a daughter named Elizabeth whose marriage isn't known.
William Harris was of Wolf Swamp , St. Martin ’s Parish, Hanover Co., VA. He first appeared in the land tax list for Hanover Co. in 1782 with 400 acres in Wolf Swamp . He continued to appear in the land tax list and the personal property tax list in Hanover Co. until 1801, at which time 404½ acres were conveyed to George Harris. William Harris appeared in the land records and tax records of Prince Edward Co., VA from 1767 until 1799, and his estate was last mentioned in 1805, when Graves Harris and George Harris were involved as executors of the estate. He was killed leading his troops at battle of Franklin , TN , and was commended for bravery.

George Brown Stephenson (114) was born 30 Sept. 1891 , and died in 1963 in Ocala , FL. He first married Lucille Phelps. This marriage ended in divorce and it is said that he would never afterwards mention her name. They had no children. He married second Annie Elizabeth Thomas. This was a happy marriage. They lived in Leesburg , FL for a while and moved to Ocala , FL in 1948. George was a Ford automobile salesman for many years with Ocala Motor Co., then later a Ford agent at Leesburg , FL. He was a Mason and had many Masonic honors. He was buried in Highland Memorial Park , Ocala , FL , service by Dr. J. Conally Evans, pastor of First Baptist Church , Ocala . (R-4)
